| Archeological
sites in Ecuador show evidence that bamboo has been
used for 5000 years in South America, first
by indigenous people. Dr. J.J. Parsons's article
in Geographical Review Vol. 81: "Giant
American Bamboo in the Vernacular Architecture of Colombia
and Ecuador", of 1991, is didactic . Bridges, fences,
barricades, aqueduct and even prisons were made with bamboo
species Guadua angustifolia, colombians ans ecuatorians's
favourite. |

The
social potential of bamboo is becoming aknowleged as having
vital importance in "poor"countries development.
Recent habitational programs utiilize bamboo in Ecuador,
Colombia and Costa Rica. Thess programs
are results of latin-american architects and engeneers
efforts, like Oscar Hidalgo Lopes, Simon Velez
and Ana Cecilia Chaves, which works is internacionaly
recognized. Integration ease between planting, cutting,
transport, handling and resistance give this material
the reputation of "21st century timber ", as expressed
in article "Bamboo:
Timber for the 21st century", Dr. Cherla B.
