Most spread
and known bamboo problably is Phyllostachys aurea,
in Brazil also called "bambu-mirim", and in english
speaker countries "Golden Bamboo", "Fishing pole
Bamboo" among others. It is a leptomorph rhizome bamboo,
and better adapted to temperate climates. In Brasil and
some South American countries we see bamboos similar to P. aurea,
more than 5 cms in diameter. According to Luc Vittry this is
not possible in tropical climates, the species must be another.
This bamboo is used for fishing poles, structures, furniture,
objects and weaving, for its strenght.
Phyllostachys
genus is the most varied, having great number of species. Another
very apreciated Phyllostachys is Phyllostachys pubescens,
also known as Phyllostachys Edulis or even Phyllostachys
heterocycla "Pubescens". But its popular name
is "Moso", very used in China and Japan for
its delicious edible shoots. It is also the most used bamboo
in flooring factorys (Plyboo).
An interesting
characteristic of this species is the compressed lower internodes.
When a Moso grows entirely compressed it is called P. pubescens
"Kikko" or "Tortoise Shell Bamboo",
a rare and misterious plant.

Species
shown below is classified as Phyllostachys aurea,
but specialist disagree, saying that the P. aurea
could not grow as big. Clóvis (left), bamboo
furniture maker, at Areal - RJ, does not gives
the subject much attention, but knows a lot about this
species characteristics.
