is very versatile. Animals likes bamboo even before
men. It gives food for panda bears, found in Asia,
and also some rare species of lemur, found in Africa.

Bamboo
shoots are culinary delights for asians, specially
chinese, japanese and indians. They
are part of traditional food, fried,
boiled and dryed. Shoots commerce and production
are important to China, Hong Kong and Vietnam.
In 1992 China exported about 90 thousand tons
of shoots, and received 90 million US dollars (Crook,
F.W. 1994. Vegetable production and trade in China. p.
38-44. China. Situation and Outlook Series. Int. Agr.
Trade Rep. USDA, ERS, WRS-94-4). Japan, from
1993 to 1997, imported 2.6 thousand tons of
edible bamboo shoots, paying 3 million Yens. LinAn

At
present ocidental medicine knows about the rich
nourishments found in bamboo shoots: vegetal protein,
fibers, aminoacids, calcium, phospher, vitamines
B1, B2 and C. Chinese medicine knows that bamboo
shoots diet helps digestion, stimulating intestine
and stomach, prevents and cures heart diseases and
cancers and lows fat and blood pressure. In
Brasil popular medicine says that bamboo
leaves tea is good agaiint coughs.
